With reference to his geographical background, his musical upbringing (The Beatles and Béla Bartók amongst others) and his wide experience as a touring jazz pianist, Bojan Z is a very open-minded musician. This open-mindedness translates musically not only into very original compositions but also into a unique sound. Soul Shelter (2012) is Bojan Zulfikarpašić’s second solo recording on the piano, eleven years after Solobsession.
Often experimenting with the piano strings or turning the piano into a percussive instrument, the pianist has also been playing simultaneously and blending the sounds of two keyboards for several years now. With an electric piano or “Xenophone” as he calls it (which is essentially a customized Fender Rhodes) at one hand and a “traditional” acoustic piano at the other, Bojan Z constantly juggles between the two keyboards/two musical cultures to broaden his sonic palette. The beautiful “Sabayle blues” perfectly illustrates this approach:
