“Indians/Desaparecido” is one of these epic jazz compositions: a dramatic introduction followed by a series of arresting choruses. In order of appearance, we have Glen Ferris on trombone, Louis Sclavis on clarinet, Bojan Zulfikarpašić on piano, Henri Texier on double bass and Tony Rabeson on drums. The composition features on An Indian’s Week (Label Bleu – 1993), and like the rest of the songs on that particular recording, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact source or specific musical tradition each tune goes back to.
Yet, An Indian’s Week seamlessly fuses elements of traditional Balkan music, European café music, African Rhythms, Hard Bop, avant-garde and free jazz to deliver in an innovative and contemporary jazz idiom one melodic and emotional theme after another. A terrific musical mélange and a landmark recording.
