Monsters is a 2010 British independent science fiction film written and directed by Gareth Edwards with a wonderful soundtrack by Jon Hopkins. The film chronicles the journey of an American journalist and her fellow citizen from alien-infected and quarantined Mexico to the American border.
Filmed on a shoestring budget with only two professional actors, Monsters was entirely shot on location with a restricted technical crew of one cameraman and one sound engineer. Remote editing was carried out as the story progressed. But it is precisely these technical constraints that sustain the film’s constant tension and contribute to the overall atmosphere of bewilderment and confusion.
Jon Hopkins’ music captures that mood to perfection as the protagonists progress through post-apocalyptic Central America.
