Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich is a traditional singer from the Corca Dhuibhne area of West Kerry (Ireland) and performs here a fine example of a macaronic song (with lyrics both in English and Gaelic). Whereas similar pieces or sean-nós songs are usually unaccompanied or sparsely arranged, this rendition of Cailín na nUrla Donn (the brown-haired woman) gets an almost chamber musical treatment.
The live piece is expertly executed and the session’s relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere is definitely palpable here. This song is part of The Highland Sessions, a six-part series featuring 32 artists from Ireland and Scotland under the musical supervision of Steve Cooney.

The series was filmed in 2005 and aired on the BBC, but was only released on DVD in late 2010. Cailín na nUrla Donn is also available on Taobh na Gréine, Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaoich’s first solo recording.
And the Irish – English duelling is also nicely mirrored by the gender split – women on one side, facing off the male ensemble! Like the lilt and the swing in this. Simple tune which feels like it should get boring… but doesn’t. Lovely vocal quality too.
